Total entries for the three race series are set to hit 2,000. Late entries for the Shettleston race which takes place next Sunday 10th May on Glasgow Green include the recently crowned Scottish 5K champion, Kevin Campbell from Cambuslang who stormed to an impressive victory last week in 14:01 in the Lindsay’s Scottish Championships, in first attempt at the distance. Campbell has clearly recovered from his over distance efforts in the World 50K Championships in India where he represented GB. Joining Campbell will be defending champion and Babcock Series record holder Omar Ahmed from Birmingham’s Birchfield Harriers. Ahmed’s 29:06 set in last year’s race may well go this year with 20 runners lining up, each in possession of a personal best faster than 30 minutes. Ahmed won the recent AJ Bell Birmingham Half Marathon in a comfortable 66:10.
Natasha Phillips from Dundee will be defending her title and series record of 32:48 but will face stiff competition from Annabel Simpson of Fife who will be flying down from her new base in Orkney.
More than 700 runners are expected to toe the line on Sunday.
Runners for the Babcock 2K Family Fun Run are encouraged simply to turn up on the day, no entry is required. All runners and parents welcome from the age of eight. Every finisher will receive a medal, bottle of water and Tunnock’s biscuit.
There is still time to enter the Babcock Dumbarton 10K on Thursday May 21st and the Babcock Helensburgh 10K on Thursday 28th May, both at 7.30pm.
Series entrants will receive this year’s specially designed More Mile t-shirt and Team Clyde runners will have their very own t-shirt. Both pictured, modelled by Helensburgh Race Director, Debbie Savage.
Every finisher will receive a specially designed medal and item of Start Fitness running merchandise. There are more than £6,000 in cash prizes and Start Fitness vouchers for the first ten men and women, first three teams of three, age group awards for U20,O40, 50 and 60. The Community Advertiser are sponsoring the first Local Male and Female awards. In addition, there will be 24 spot prizes from Start Fitness at each race.
